Fifty Key Thinkers on the Environment (Fifty Key Thinkers)
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (15 January, 2001)
Authors: Joy A. Palmer, David E. Cooper, and Peter Blaze Corcoran
Average review score:

Environmental thought through the ages
A useful addition to the Routledge key thinkers series and a very helpful guide for students in various types of 'environmental studies'.

Clearly, any choice of 'key thinkers' in any area will be partial and provisional. However, Palmer has done a good job of offering a broad selection, from religious founders to philosophers to writers to scientists to activists. The compilers are also well chosen, experts by and large. For instance J. Baird Callicott and Holmes Rolston III appear both as 'key thinkers' and as contributors.

A particular strength of this collection of biographical essays is that is covers a much wider historical scope than many of the standard readers in environmental studies. Thus it goes some way towards setting more recent thinkers in their historical context. Also very helpful are the bibliographies appearing with each entry of the individual's 'major writings' and of recommended 'further reading'.

A book of this sort succeeds if it gently makes readers aware of what they do not know, arouses their interest, makes them keen to explore further. While many of the subjects described here were already known to me, there are many others about whom I am now looking forward to learning more. In short, success.

I Am the Universe
Published in Paperback by Harcourt (January, 1993)
Authors: Harcourt Brace and Barbara Corcoran
Average review score:

A story woven with warmth, humor & adolescent understanding.
When Kit learned she had to write a paper called "Who I Am" for her English class, it was the last straw to her. She felt as if she hardly had time to think, let alone write. Kit was too busy worrying about her mother's illness, her younger brother's troubles in school, her older brother's girlfriends, and her little sister's need for attention. Yet, it was through these family concerns that Kit found the answer to her question: Who am I, anyway? This is a book about a preteen's teetering between childish blunders and adult insights. A delightful character, Kit is a heroine despite herself. Like many 12-year-olds, she's funny when at her most serious, with wisecracks that come straight from the heart. (Orinally titled: I Am The Universe.)

Palgue (1,2,3 Of Tae Kwon Do)
Published in Paperback by Wehman Brothers (June, 1973)
Authors: Kim Pyung Soo and John Corcoran
Average review score:

Good as an aid to training, but not a "teach yourself" text
Palgue (1,2,3 of Tae Kwon Do) is intended as a reference book for students of Tae Kwon Do/Karate/Kung Fu, and should be taken as such. However, as a reference, it is incredibly useful. Included in the book are the three basic forms of Tae Kwon Do (Palgue 1,2 and 3, hence the title), and a refresher on the basic uses of the hands and feet in Tae Kwon Do.

This book is well-illustrated, and the illustrations are very useful to the performance of the forms, but this book is no substitute for training under a teacher; the forms are harder than GM Kim Soo makes them appear! However, for practice at home, when you need to remember exactly HOW the forms are performed, this book is what you need

Palgue 1-2-3 of Tae Kwon Do Hyung
Published in Paperback by Black Belt Communications, Inc. (March, 1983)
Authors: Kim Pyung Soo, John Murray, and John Corcoran
Average review score:

Basic info and details of first three palgue forms
This was written by Grandmaster Kim Soo, currently the youngest 10th dan Tae Kwon Do black belt in the world and founder of the Cha Yon Ryu ("Natural Way") system. This book starts with a brief historical backgrodun of Tae Kwon Do and then goes on to basic sections on striking points, warm-up exercises, stance, blocks, and strikes. The majority of the book is dedicated to detailed step-by-step instruction in the first three palgue forms.

Rhapsodies in Black: Art of the Harlem Renaissance
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (September, 1997)
Authors: Richard J. Powell, David A. Bailey, Hayward Gallery, Institute of International Visual Arts, University of California Press, Corcoran Gallery of Art, and Institute of International Visual Arts S

expanding the scope of a central moment in modern art
This book provides those who are more likely to have believed the Harlem Renaissance to be entirely literary and entirely Harlem-centered with evidence of the all-encompassing scope and international import of this crucial, modern, blackened artistic surge. The exploration of black identity and construction of black nationality called the Harlem Renaissance is insightfully revisited through the social and artistic problems enacted in the works, within the voices, and upon the bodies of protagonists: Josephine Baker, Paul Robeson, and surprisingly, Orson Welles. This book is a fine complement to books which focus on literary-hitsorical aspects (such as David L. Lewis' _When Harlem was in Vogue_) and those which focus on music such as Angela Davis' _Blues Legacies and Black Feminism_ and Albert Murray's _Stomping the Blues_). It is a a fabulous expansion of the artistic territory encompassed in black art. Maya Angleou has said: "I am human, and therefore nothing h! uman can escape my grasp." I believe that black art has languished too long in the storage bin where fads and fanices go to die. _Black Rhapsodies_ rescues the Renaissance from this fate by positing black art as a philosphical stance, therefore attainable in varied ways throughout the post WWI world--not as the exotic and undisciplined, irregular expressions of primitive black jungle souls on the drum-pulsing streets of 20s Harlem. I couldn't agree more, and I hope that the idea that black art is both a real category and a complex one full of contadictions is adopted in the teaching of the Renaissance.

My one complaint is minor and may stem from my own unfamiliarity with the indexing system of books on art. I found it difficult to locate quickly the visual art being described in certain passages. If there were a more convenient way on idexing the art or of expaining the system to the novice reader, it would be appreciated.

Time Management: For People with No Time
Published in Paperback by William Waldron Pub (November, 1999)
Author: Mary E. Corcoran
Average review score:

Very helpful advice
What a delight! The reader is treated to specific steps toward efficiency and time management by the second page. Dr. Corcoran doesn't "waste any time" at all getting to the meat of the matter. I read this book through, but I'm willing to bet that reading just one page a day would improve the average person's use of time.

Mustang 1964 1/2-1973 Restoration Guide (Authentic Restoration Guide)
Published in Paperback by Motorbooks International (January, 1999)
Authors: Tom Corcoran and Earl Davis
Average review score:

Some Sections Incomplete
Although the blowup diagrams are adequate, many sections were incomplete. All product lines (i.e. engines and body styles) weren't represented in certain years. If you are looking to do a full concourse restoration, make sure your car is fully represented in this book.

Big book, lots of detail, but...
The stuff I wanted for my '66 had small pictures for the details and some were even faded out! It looked like some of the pictures had either been 1) poorly scanned in and placed in the book, or 2) it was a poor printing. I'm giving it 3 stars because the book is still worth purchasing, but this isn't a substitute for a good official diagram.

Good Information
Outstanding detail. Hundreds of factoy drawings and exploded views.

Joint Custody With a Jerk: Raising a Child With an Uncooperative Ex
Published in Paperback by St. Martin's Press (April, 1996)
Authors: Julia A. Ross, Judy Corcoran, Julie A. Ross, and Ross Corcoran
Average review score:

Great for most situations
This book is great for most divorced couples with children. It helps you examine the motivations for the decisions you make about your child(ren) without basing those decisons on irrational emotions.

However, I would not have ordered this book if I were privy to its scope beforehand because it admittedly offers little help for those dealing with abusive or deadbeat ex-spouses.

N/A if Domestic Violence is a factor
This book has become more valuable to my situation since 5 years has gone by. In the beginning my ex was very clouded by violence, power and control. Distance, time and a restraining order has changed the current situation. This book has many techniques that were not viable when we first seperated. Now when he says he will pick up my son, he knows that if he doesn't show up on time time we won't be there waiting for him.

Great ideas to help both parents establish communications.
The book was loaded with great ways to open a line of communicatoin with your ex and had several methods for solving problems and helping your child to cope with divorce. Many tips on single parenting and carrying on a parenting relationship after the marital relationship has ceased! Highly recommended reading for both "Jerks!"
